Paws Way: Check it out.

So about a couple of months ago Mallory and I were wandering along the harborfront when we saw this building with dog silhouettes pasted all over it. We were intrigued. The building is called Paws Way, a community and activity center for dog owners, their dogs and pet enthusiasts nestle right beside the harborfront center.

The day that we happened to enter the building they were celebrating British Dogs and had show dogs, a dog parade, a Renaissance musical act, and (my personal favorite) a man who called himself London Bobby. AMAZING.

Note: London Bobby was wearing a glitterized Union Jack suit, was drinking whiskey from a London Mug and was playing his rendition of "How much is that doggy in the window". YES.

I was basically sold on the location based on my first visit but decided to return today with my dog Paddington because we were near by for Illuminati Festival and Paddington needed to get a drink. So in we went. We got to do an agility obstacle course, get help from a dog trainer, learn how to motivate your dog and I also walked away with a loot bag filled with treats for him as well as Nescafe Caramel Latte mix for me. And how much was this you might ask? FREE.

Anyways, I won't bore you with any further details but the gist of it is: Paws Way. Harbour Front Center. Free. Dogs. London Bobby. Check it out. :)

The Facebook Countown: Live at the Scene

So I'm sitting at home like some loser on a Friday night waiting to grab my name (and see if anyone grabs the one I need for work) on Facebook. In case you haven't heard, Facebook is now allowing all users to have their own "vanity URLs". For example: if your name is Hugh Jass (hehehehe), your Facebook URL could be www.facebook.com/hughjass or www.facebook.com/hjass, etc., etc. So while I'm sitting here FREAKING out about the possibility (and the thought) of 200 million Facebook users racing online to grab their names, I can't help but wonder...am I (a) one of the very few who knows about this, or am I (b) one of the only few that cares about this.

Ponder this. This news of the Facebook Vanity URLs has been blogged about like CRAZY since they announced it earlier this week. In fact, Mashable (an online social media blog) is ON LOCATION at the Facebook headquarters to report the play by play of what's going on with the situation. So as I'm sitting on the couch with Steve who's watching game seven of the Stanley Cup playoffs, what am I doing? I'm on my couch, tweeting the play by play of the Facebook race of the century. I looked over at him and then down at my iPhone and thought to myself...hello? What the hell am I doing? Who cares if I end up being "melissa2929993" instead of just "melissa". Would I ever be actively giving out my facebook URL to people so much so that it would NEED to be easy for them to understand.

Once the game was over, I hurriedly opened my laptop to see what people were saying on Facebook and to tell you the truth, it's not all that much. Then it hit me. No one cares about all of this hoopla but marketers (i.e. me) who think that this is a do or die situation if they don't grab the best Vanity URL out there before someone else does. The race tonight won't be between 200 million Facebook users, it will be between the million (or hopefully less for my sake) marketers and maybe a few die hard Facebook fans who think that what's important is the name that you grab. What's missing is that the whole point of Facebook doesn't center around the name but each person or brand...so then I ask you this question: Will grabbing the name you just GOT to have make your brand/person/page any better? ...probably not.

None the less, with 27 minutes and 21 seconds to go, I will still sit here and wait.

(**cough** LOSER)

Why AkwardFamilyPhotos.com is the best site ever.

Last week I was doing some blog research for work when I stumbled upon this one mom who was blogging about how her favorite website was www.awkwardfamilyphotos.com. Being the skeptic that I am, I visited the site to indeed find it to be the best site ever (Leah also called out this site last week). As such, I've compiled my list of my favorite awkward family photos so you too can see why this site is nothing but amazing.

The Mullet Family

AMAZING (right?)! There's nothing like a mullet to cheer up my spirits. Do me a favor. Go to work, have a shitty day and then look at this photo and try not to smile. This picture is not only hilarious but it has the power to loosen my stress induced facial "subway scowl" into a relaxed smile. Ah the mysterious power of the mullet....sigh!

The Winnie the Pooh Family

You know when you see those pictures where people dress up their babies in stupid costumes? Well this mother one-upped the other mothers on the playground and not only dressed up her baby but made her husband dress up too. There's nothing like seeing a picture of a man losing his dignity in an Eeyore costume....yet there's a slightly naughty look in his eyes. **shudder**

Awkward Man/Boy with Sword

I don't think that this picture technically qualifies as a family photo, however, I'm very thankful that it was included none the less. This picture has all of my favorite things combined in one photo. It has a mullet, an awkward looking person AND a sword! The American Flag waving in the background makes it patriotic...I think? Stand guard!

Jays Game = Nine Dollars Well Spent

So yesterday, I did the least likely thing any Torontonian would do, I went to a Jays Game. Maybe it was the ten dollar beer or the rantings of an angry man sitting behind us (at one point in the game he actually told the other team to "die already") but it was indeed nine dollars (and three hours) well spent.

For nine dollars I was able to have a decent view of the game, yell at others, get harassed by a 12 year old girl and see someone get escorted by security. The best thing about a baseball game? All of the above behavior is not only acceptable, I dare to say that it's encourage. That's right, the Skydome (what's the Rogers Center?) is a place where you are encouraged to be as obnoxious and drunk as possible. And the best way to join in on teh fun is to follow the crowd, have no mind of your own, yell when they yell, boo when they boo and "wave" when they wave.

Is it wrong that there's some sort of peace in knowing that the only social expectation you have is to misbehave along with others or even better yet outstage them? Next time you go to a game chant something rediculous and see how many people follow you without even thinking. Or yell out something completely random and see how many people cheer you on. (Last night I yelled out, "Peperoni!", which was well received.) Not only is it entertaining, it's nine dollars well spent.

At the Jays game, even the children have no social boundaries. In front of my seats there were two children sitting with their father. They kept asking me questions (as children often seem to do) about who my favorite player was, do I go to games often and so forth. (As a side note, the father never turned around in his seat nor did he say one word to either us or is children during the whole game.)

The little girl started to talk to us about video games, as children often do, and showed me and my roomate Mallory her Nintendo DS. "How cool," I said (or something similar to that effect). Then she asked Mallory if she liked the game Zelda. Now Mallory not only loves Zelda she has a triforce tattoo on her back, so naturally Mallory said, "I love it". At this point, the little girl started to make fun of her for liking such a "childish" game, told her to go to Value Village and then questioned the size of her brain. Seeing my friend get burned by a 12 year old girl? Nine dollars well spent.

(She also said that my friend Nathan, see picture left, was only half a man.)

To make the whole night complete the game ended with the croud chanting, "Pizza" (we were one strikout away from winning a free slice of Pizza Pizza), a man walking past us with 'I love BJ's' written on his face followed by the little girl yelling, "Even I know what that means!" and the Jays winning. All in all, nine dollars well spent.

My Favorite Ads of the Week

I freaking love a good ad campaign or commercial (and yes I am a marketing nerd). Here are my top pics from this week.

1. Lenscrafters - See What You Love

The first time I saw this ad I was in complete awe. The whole concept behind the ad is not only beautifully executed but it also does a great job pulling at the heart strings of glasses wearers everywhere (including myself) by elevating their brand beyond a company that simply sells glasses but gives people the ability to “see what they love”. (Which is incredibly corny –but hey, they got me!)

This campaign was put together by Cutwater (US) and not only do I think they did an amazing job in making glasses something more than just a product they also did an amazing job in selecting the song that accompanied the ad. Although there are rumors online that the song in the ad was specifically composed by someone hired by Lenscrafters (allegedly called ‘Hapiness’), I did a little more digging and found out the song is called Colours, by Donovan. (Fun fact: Donovan was also responsible for the commercial “classic hit” Mellow Yellow from a million years ago.)

2. Stella Artois Light

Any commercial that combines pirates and beer is a winner in my book. It’s the classic story of boy meets girl, boy offers girl beer and beer is stolen by pirates. Enough said.

3. Excel

Now this commercial wouldn’t make my top favorite list if it wasn’t for the fact that my smart-ass boyfriend pointed out the fact that the donut in this commercial doesn’t look like a donut at all. Let’s just say the hole of the donut looks like a different kind of hole. Now, if you’re smart enough to figure out what I’m implying (or even if you’re not) watch the commercial again and see for yourself. Seriously, they should have put some sprinkles on that thing or something!
